St. Bede's Episcopal Church

Community Garden

St. Bede’s Community Garden started in 2009 with 3 raised beds, a handful of enthusiastic gardeners and a goal of providing fresh vegetables to Tucker Net Food Pantry.   We now have 6 beds and plant tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, squash and basil.  Last year we provided the Tucker Net Food Pantry with over 200 pounds of fresh vegetables.  We try to garden organically, using no insecticides, and water the garden by pumping water from the adjacent creek.

Basil is made into pesto sauce and sold to provide additional funds for new plants so that our Garden can be totally self-supporting.  This year we are adding an herb garden in order to have other herbs to enjoy and share.  As our garden grows, so does our commitment to provide fresh food for those in need while giving us all a chance to enjoy the wonder and beauty of God’s gift of life.   As Patricia Barrett wrote in The Sacred Garden,   “Connections with gardens, even small ones, even potted plants, can become windows to the inner life.  The simple act of stopping and looking at the beauty around us can be prayer.”
